Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to question specific calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
