Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
