Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
