The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
