The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
