Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
